New Ships and Coastal Expansion

In the past six months, American Cruise Lines (ACL) has continued rolling out its ambitious “Project Blue” fleet of small coastal ships. After launching American Eagle and American Glory in 2023-24, the company plans to introduce four more “Coastal Cats” by 2026, including American Liberty in late 2025 and American Legend in 2026. These 109-passenger catamarans are purpose-built for U.S. coastal waters, featuring modern lounges, spacious staterooms, open-air dining and shallow drafts that allow them to reach smaller ports and river towns.

Extended Cruises for America’s 250th Birthday

With the nation’s semiquincentennial in 2026, ACL is honoring America’s maritime heritage with a slate of “Extended Cruises.” Initially the line announced four itineraries ranging from 35 to 61 days, linking multiple rivers and coastlines. In August 2025, it added a fifth: the 48-day Great United States cruise, which will sail from Boston to San Diego via the Hudson, Mississippi and Columbia & Snake rivers. These longer voyages blend river, coastal and inland routes with overnights in key cities, plus complimentary excursions, historians on board and regionally inspired cuisine.

New England and Chesapeake Updates

ACL has expanded its New England season to run from May through November, deploying both traditional paddlewheelers and newer modern riverboats. Highlights include the 15-day Grand New England Cruise combining Maine, Newport and Martha’s Vineyard with Canadian maritime ports such as Halifax and Lunenburg. Meanwhile, the Chesapeake Bay program adds new “Smith Island & Tangier” day excursions focused on watermen culture and soft-shell crabbing. ACL’s expanded small-ship fleet means more variety in cabin categories and the ability to maintain a nearly 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio.

Mississippi River Enhancements

On the Mississippi, ACL now offers 12 different itineraries stretching from St. Paul to New Orleans. Its modern riverboats feature larger balcony suites, glass-domed lounges and a Mississippi-themed décor. In spring 2025, the company will debut an overnight pre-cruise stay in Memphis on certain itineraries, with a private blues club performance and exclusive tour of Sun Studio included.

Environmental Initiatives

ACL is also investing in eco-friendly technology, having started to equip its fleet with hybrid propulsion and advanced wastewater treatment systems. The new Coastal Cats are designed to reduce fuel consumption, and the company has committed to eliminating single-use plastics across the fleet by 2026.
